Do You Need Oral Surgery?

Do You Need Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases in the oral cavity and jaw. The surgical team plays a crucial role in removing impacted teeth, treating facial injuries, correcting TMJ disorders, performing biopsies of suspicious lesions, and performing dental implant procedures.

Surgical procedures are often performed to treat existing medical conditions, correct functional issues or cosmetic concerns, and improve the appearance of your smile. During an oral surgical procedure at Dillon Costantino Dental, our dentist will be able to address your concerns and develop a treatment plan that is best suited to your needs.

When Is Oral Surgery Required?

  • You have persistent jaw pain that interferes with daily life and is not alleviated with other options. An oral maxillofacial surgeon can help you determine why your pain is occurring and determine the best treatment method.
  • You have difficulty breathing through your nose due to breathing difficulties caused by your nasal cavity. A sinus lift may be needed to open the nasal passage and improve airflow.
  • You have a cleft lip and/or palate affecting speech, eating, and overall facial development. Oral surgeons can perform corrective procedures to improve your quality of life.

Types of Oral Surgery

Tooth Extraction

If a tooth has already fallen out, your dentist will likely recommend extracting it instead of saving it to prevent infections. The tooth will also need to be removed if it is causing overcrowding issues. While not all extractions are because of pain, sometimes a dentist will need to perform an extraction if your tooth is beyond repair and is causing problems like pain or infection. An extraction may also be necessary if you are getting braces or another type of orthodontic treatment and need to have teeth removed to make room in your mouth for all of your new appliances.

Bone Grafting

The bone in your jaw is essential for supporting your teeth and preventing the loss of bone density as you age. When a tooth is lost or removed, the bone in the area will begin to deteriorate. To avoid this, we may recommend bone grafting to preserve the health of the jaw bone and prevent future tooth loss.

Dental Implant Placement

If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, dental implants can be an excellent solution for replacing those teeth and improving your oral health and overall quality of life. Dental implants are small titanium posts surgically implanted into your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. Once in place, they act like a natural tooth root and provide a strong and stable foundation for your replacement tooth or teeth.

You may need oral surgery for several reasons, including for impacted wisdom teeth or to correct bite problems. Get in touch with Dillon Costantino Dental at 10505 West Pico Blvd, West Los Angeles, CA 90064, or call (310) 475-0617 for the best dental care.
